Dear
Expert, I have recently had to change my horses from a high
fat feed to a lower fat feed because of the rising costs of
grains. Most of my horses seem fine but a couple of my show
horses are losing weight and don't have the bloom they once
did. What I can I do that is most cost effective to help them?
|
A. First of all make sure your horse
is receiving all the hay or hay and grass he will eat. Horses
get a lot of calories from hay and grass. Secondly, you can
increase their fat intake by adding Seminole Ultra Bloom to
the feed. Ultra Bloom is stabilized rice bran that is 20% fat
and supplies 2,000 calories per pound. One to two pounds per
day is adequate. |

Dear
Expert, I am feeding horses my horses an expensive senior
equine feed and they have been losing weight over the last
few months. I noticed on my feed tag that there is now peanut
hulls included as an ingredient in the feed and I don't think
that was in there before. Could this be why my horses aren't
thriving like they were?
|
| A.
Yes, your horse could be losing weight because
of the peanut hulls. They are not a good source of calories
for horses. I suggest using Seminole Senior Formula or Wellness
Senior Mix, both of the products are high in in quality, digestible
fibers from beet pulp and soybean hulls. These feeds are fixed-formulation,
and contain no poor quality fibers like peanut hulls. The addition
of a senior feed with quality ingredients will be of benefit
to your horse.
