National Youth Horse Leader's Symposium in Gainesville, FL.

Leading our Youth

By Cindy Schonholtz

The University of Florida is hosting the 29th annual National Youth Horse Leaders Symposium in Gainesville on February 3-5, 2006. The Symposium is a production of the American Youth Horse Council (AYHC), the umbrella organization for the youth horse industry. AYHC's mission to provide encouragement, communication and resources to serve and promote the youth horse industry provides a foundation for planning the Symposium each year. The 2006 event will boast more than two-dozen internationally and nationally respected presenters assembled to share their keys to successful youth horse programming. From classroom to the tack-room, attendees will find resources, referrals, and networking to improve their ability to help kids connect through horses. A weekend program for teen leaders is always a favorite bringing youth participating in many different horse disciplines and breed activities together to learn leadership skills and effective horsemanship techniques.

AYHC and hosts University of Florida expect a capacity crowd for the event. Symposium Committee Chair Ed Johnson comments, "We are excited to be able to host the Symposium in Florida. The diversity of the national-level speakers will benefit all who attend and strengthen our Florida youth horse program! Additionally, the exchange of ideas from the broad spectrum of horse-oriented youth leaders attending the conference will give everyone great ideas to take back and implement." The symposium routinely draws a broad representation of youth horse leaders from breed associations, equine sport organizations, Cooperative Extension, universities, and the crucially important hands-on youth leaders from such groups as 4-H, U.S. Pony Club, National High School Rodeo, Future Farmers of America, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and more.

The NYHLS will again include a variety of presentations including a roundtable session, classroom presentations on a variety of topics and, of course, an afternoon of live horse demonstrations. A pre-conference tour of Ocala/Marion County Horse Farms will provide an excellent kickoff to the Symposium!

Selected topic areas for the 2006 National Youth Horse Leaders Symposium include:
-Methods to Discuss Horse Show Ethics and Survey Results
- Blueprint for a Youth Horse Judging Training Program.
- How "soft skills" Influence Your Horse Career and Business Success
- Publicity for your Nonprofit Horse Club.
- Managing Horse Show Stress: Tips for Riders and Their Families.
- Using Lunge Line lessons for Teaching all Levels of Riding Skills.
- The Stone Model Horse Project: The Model Horse as a Teaching Tool
- Three Contests in One Weekend: Conserving your Volunteer's Precious Time!
- Horse Advisory Boards the Work Horse of Youth Horse Programs.
- Living with Children and Horses, Combining Horses and Common Safety
in the Same Backyard.

Additionally, a full session on Penn State University and AYHC's research on the impact of youth horse programs, a session on AQHA's Junior Master Horseman Program and much more!

Make your plans to join the youth horse industry in sunny Florida in 2006! The conference facilities of the Park Plaza Hotel in Gainesville coupled with the wonderful facilities at the University of Florida promise a great warm weather destination for the 2006 National Youth Horse Leaders Symposium.
