Our Experts explain the nuts and bolts of equine nutrition.

by Larry Mack, Equine Nutritionist

Q:
During the Summer I stop feeding some of my horses because they can hold their weight by eating the grass in the pasture and all of the hay they want. Are they receiving adequate nutrition and how do I get the minerals and vitamins into them?
A: Proving a free-choice mineral that is made for horses is the best way to ensure they are receiving adequate nutrition while a predominately forage based diet. Seminole Grass Balancer 16:8 Horse Mineral provides the salt, minerals and vitamins the horses need. It is available in either a 25 pound block or 25 pound granular form. The blocks are soft enough that horses can eat them but water proofed so they don't wash away in the rain. The granular form should be provided under a covered area protected from the rain but it is loose so they can freely eat it.

Grass Balancer 16:8 Horse Mineral should be provided year round to horses as long as more than half of their roughage intake is a "grass" type. When alfalfa or other legume type hays make up more than half of their forage intake then use Seminole Alfa Balancer 12:12 Horse Mineral.
