Horses on Campus
Dawgs have excellent taste.
Last month, the University of Georgia Equestrian Team chose Seminole Feed, the
World’s Best Equine Feed, as its No. 1 equine nutrition provider.

Seminole Feed, as the Official Feed of the University of Georgia
Equestrian Team in Athens, Georgia, will supply top nutrition and
equine nutrition consultations for the 40+ horses in use by UGA’s
Equestrian Team.
Last April in College Station, Texas, the Georgia
riders won first place at the Varsity Nationals, a show that is
the preliminary vision for an NCAA Championship as created by the
nation’s current varsity head coaches. Georgia outlasted Oklahoma State and Texas A&M to take first place in the overall standings. The Bulldogs also won the English team competition and took second place in the Western standings.
Seminole will have a strong presence with the UGA athletes, working
with coach Meghan Boenig and other key players as the company provides
the world’s
best products to these top equine athletes.
Smiling Feet
What makes your horse’s hooves happy?
Due to the effectiveness and increased awareness of the Spillers/Seminole Happy Hoof feed product, The American Farrier’s Journal, a popular magazine for farriers, published a feature story on the product in its September 2003 issue.
Happy Hoof, the only product of its kind in the United States, is scientifically formulated for horses or ponies that suffer from, or at risk of, laminitis. Read additional credible information about laminitis, hoof care and more at www.americanfarriers.com.
Expanding Horizons
Twenty years ago, no one thought they could do it.
Back in the late 1970’s, lots of people were laughing when Dr. John Peterson and Dr. Johnny Mac Smith announced their intentions to build a nice equine hospital in Ocala.
In 1981, the doors were opened for the first time, and even Peterson and Smith figured they’d be doing well if they could get five veterinarians on staff.
Talk about outdoing themselves! Today, Peterson and Smith Equine Hospital is fulltime work for 25 staff veterinarians, and it’s considered the third-largest of its kind in the United States.
“We have been busting at the seams for quite awhile,” Dr. Peterson said in August. We have been scrunching offices together ever since (the early days).”
Thanks to the growth, Peterson and Smith recently broke ground at its main surgical facility, an 11-acre setup on SW 60th Avenue in Ocala. The add-on will incorporate a 4,000-square-foot building.
“ We’ve had some expansion in the past to our surgical and hospital facilities, but now we are trying to make room for the expansion of our veterinary population and the business part of the practice,” Peterson said.
The group expects to be able to expand to 32 staff veterinarians with the new expansion.
“ Hopefully, growth will continue,” Peterson said.
Current expansion includes building offices, additional work space for
veterinarians, a conference room and lobby. In the future, more barns could
be constructed, as well.
