Peace Rules
A Triple Crown contender to deliver America’s message
of peace.
Dr. Ronald Chak, D.V.M., of Newchance Farm in Summerfield, Florida,
knew May 2003 would be special. He’d been counting the
days until Peace Rules, a sorrel colt he bred and foaled out
in 2000 (Jules x Hold to Fashion by Hold Your Peace) would have
a chance to run for the big Triple Crown purses.
A proud papa, Dr. Chak knew Peace Rules had the speed and grit
it takes to win. In fact, he had to think long and hard before
selling him in 2002 for
$35,000. Today, Peace Rules’ lifetime earnings exceed $1 million.
“He’s bred to be a sprinter,” Dr. Chak says. “I think
he’ll make a big impact.”
When Peace Rules ran an exciting third place in the Kentucky Derby, even skeptics
thought he had a strong shot at the Preakness Stakes, which is the second leg
of the Triple Crown. Racing Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel described Peace
Rules as a “very, very tough racehorse.”
On Preakness day, Peace Rules shot out of the gate, leading the pack in an
exciting start, but later shifted back to fourth when Kentucky Derby winner
Funny Cide took the lead to the final wire.
But we haven’t seen the end of this patriotic colt yet. Owner Edmund
Gann has hinted at running him in the $1 million Haskell Invitational August
3. Already, Peace Rules is the third-highest money-earner in North America
for 2003, according to Equibase.
Back in North Central Florida, Dr. Chak is still smiling. On his 55-acre Newchance
Farm, a few Peace Rules siblings are running around this summer. All 40 horses
(including Peace Rules, up until his sale last year) thrive on the superior
formulation of Seminole Gold Chance 12+ pellets.
“
I like the Gold Chance 12+ because it’s high in protein but not too high,” Dr.
Chak says. “And the pellets are ideal because the horses can’t
sift out any ingredients.”
Dr. Chak also provides alfalfa hay and plentiful pasture grass, and the only
supplement used in his nutrition program is free-choice Seminole Grass Balancer
Mineral.
Ironically, Peace Rules didn’t acquire his name easily. Dr. Chak’s
first-choice name for the colt, “Rules,” was rejected by the Jockey
Club – so the wise veterinarian took another stab at the name game.
“
I got to thinking, there’s always trouble in the world,” he says. “So
why not name a horse ‘Peace Rules?’ ”
And so it came to be.
Jockey Edgar Prado summed up all our thoughts as he dismounted Peace Rules
after the Kentucky Derby. His words to the press? “Let’s hope Peace
Rules the world!”
Amen, brother. Dr. Ott Receives National Award
Dr. Ed Ott, Micanopy, Florida, was recently awarded the prestigious
American Feed Industry Association’s Award in Equine Nutrition
Research at the 2003 Equine Nutrition and Physiology Society
Awards Banquet.
This award, presented to Dr. Ott in June, recognizes “excellence
in equine nutrition research and the contributions of an individual
to equine feeding
management practices and the equine feed industry.”

Silver Screen SEABISCUIT
Ya’ gotta see it. Ya’ just gotta!
Conflict, romance, suspense, irony, drama – set right smack dab in the
middle of a story about a horse – now that’s what I’m talking
about!
Seabiscuit, released July 25 by Universal Studios, is the silver screen story
of an undersized, crooked-legged fast racehorse, named Seabiscuit, who inspired
our war-weary country during the Great Depression.
In fact, in the tumultuous days of 1938, Seabiscuit became an American cultural
icon, making more headlines than Adolf Hitler or Franklin Roosevelt. Reporters
stalked him, media recorded his every move, especially when Seabiscuit proved
he could really run, despite his funky style and odd conformation.
With a star-studded cast (Tobey Maguire, Jeff Bridges, Chris Cooper, Gary Stevens,
Elizabeth Banks, William H. Macy), Seabiscuit crosses barriers, proving great
entertainment and education to both horse lovers and general audiences.
Based on the best-selling novel by Laura Hillenbrand, Seabiscuit, published in
2001. Real-life jockeys Gary Stevens and Chris McCarron also star in the movie,
which is perfectly positioned to boost the horse industry with its inspiring
story of unlikely heroes.
So what are you waiting for? Grab a bag of buttered popcorn and a box of Whoppers
and get yourself to the movie theater!
Seabiscuit Collectibles
Like any publicized Hollywood story, Seabiscuit comes with its own
line of plush dolls, t-shirts, caps, and yes, even Breyer toy model
horses. Breyer Animal
Creations, a division of Reeves International, Inc., signed a licensing
agreement with Universal Studios Consumer Products Group to create
a toy line of model horses – including Seabiscuit and his arch
rival,War Admiral. The company also created miniature play sets of
other equine screen stars, as well as cuddly plush horses and stick
racehorses with unique designs and features. Toys are available at
mass retailers, toy specialty, tack and saddlery and farm and agriculture
stores.
